Engineering Manager I (Bilingual Japanese-English)

Job Summary:
As a bilingual (Japanese-English) Software Engineering Lead for NCR's retail solutions in Japan, you will oversee the software engineering team and execute the roadmap for retail business in the Japanese market. This leadership role requires experience managing global engineering teams of 20 or more, with a strong focus on customer-centric delivery using Agile methodologies. You will work closely with NCR’s R&D leaders in the U.S., as well as with marketing, sales, and professional services teams in Japan.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Lead the delivery of NCR’s retail solutions for the Japanese market, driving a software engineering team built on collaboration, customer satisfaction, and passion for excellence.
Champion lean development principles and design optimal organizational structures, processes, and culture to ensure high product quality and on-time roadmap delivery.
Collaborate with the solution management team to accurately understand business needs and set clear priorities.
Execute strategic initiatives that drive delivery of the solution portfolio to support customer and business success.
Oversee product portfolio quality assurance and provide technical leadership by working directly with key customers and partners.
Balance strategic planning for long-term success with tactical operations that meet evolving customer needs and drive outstanding outcomes.
Establish processes and develop team skills to maintain and continuously improve product quality and customer responsiveness.

Leadership Qualifications:
Minimum of 12 years of experience leading software engineering and management teams.
Deep understanding of Japanese geography, culture, and business processes, with fluency in spoken and written Japanese (JLPT N2 or higher preferred).
Proven ability to manage geographically distributed development teams across multiple locations while maintaining operational efficiency, budget control, and cost effectiveness.
Strong customer relationship management skills and the ability to clearly communicate technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Extensive hands-on experience leading Agile teams.
Ability to manage deliverables aligned with strategic software roadmaps, focused on customer success, speed to market, and product quality.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Proven experience in engineering leadership, with the ability to coach, mentor, and empower team members to reach their full potential.
Technical Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
At least 12 years of software engineering experience, including architectural design and software development.
Experience with POS, retail, e-commerce, or payment processing applications is highly desirable.
In-depth knowledge of Agile development processes and methodologies, particularly Scrum.
Proficiency and hands-on experience in C#, ASP.NET, Java, JavaScript, XML, JSON, cloud services, and relational databases.
Experience in client-side development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and third-party tools.
Strong expertise in the design and development of automated unit testing methodologies.
