English Speaking Engineering Manager – Platform

About the Role

The Foundation team supports engineers across MeetsMore by improving the tools, platforms, and technical foundations they rely on. The team identifies opportunities to make engineering work more effective and solves problems that benefit the organization as a whole.

Areas of responsibility include:

• Improving developer tooling, workflows, and the overall developer experience.
• Building and maintaining core platforms that support critical capabilities, such as search and identity.
• Refactoring critical code to improve performance, reliability, and maintainability.
• Analyzing system and application performance and identifying opportunities for improvement.
• Addressing socio-technical challenges by setting a strong engineering example and building tools that improve engineering culture.
• Taking initiative to identify and deliver organization-wide improvements without waiting for detailed instructions.

The role has some similarities to SRE or DevOps, but places greater emphasis on application development and coding than on operations. A separate SRE team handles SRE responsibilities, and the Foundation team works closely with them.

Key Responsibilities – Engineering Management

• Lead and manage a team of at least four engineers.
• Support engineers’ growth through regular 1:1s, mentoring, feedback, and coaching.
• Create and execute annual plans, technical roadmaps, and team priorities.
• Define meaningful KPIs, track progress, and deliver measurable outcomes.
• Help the team improve engineering quality, productivity, and delivery speed.

Technology Stack

TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS, React, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, CDK-TF (TypeScript), Kubernetes (EKS), AWS (including ECS, CloudFront, S3, and Lambda), Datadog, RabbitMQ, and Redis.

Required Qualifications

• Experience designing and building production-grade distributed systems from the ground up.
• Experience writing application code that integrates cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS), observability and monitoring platforms (e.g., Datadog), and other distributed systems.
• Proven team leadership experience, including managing four or more engineers.
• Strong people-management skills, including mentoring, supporting professional growth, and conducting regular 1:1 meetings.
• Experience with annual planning, roadmap development, and setting and achieving KPIs.
• Conversational Japanese, or a genuine willingness to learn Japanese. Support will be provided.
• Currently based in Japan or willing to relocate to Japan. Relocation support is available; please state your current location in your application.

Nice to Have

• Experience programming in a statically typed language; TypeScript is particularly useful.
