Japan Legal Lead - Iconic Global Consumer Tech Giant Exclusive job

A globally renowned consumer technology company, known for its design with ecosystem of hardware, software, and services, and its own global network of retail stores is seeking an experienced Japan Legal Lead. 

This is a senior, high-visibility role leading all legal matters for the company's Japan operations, reporting into regional and global legal leadership. As the primary legal point of contact in Japan, you will oversee commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and IP matters, while working closely with cross-functional teams spanning product, retail, and services.

Given the company's famously disciplined approach to confidentiality and product secrecy, this role requires exceptional discretion, sound judgment, and the ability to operate independently at the highest level of trust within a tightly matrixed global organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all legal matters for Japan operations, acting as the primary legal advisor to local leadership
• Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial, retail, and vendor agreements
• Advise on intellectual property protection, licensing, and enforcement matters
• Ensure compliance with Japanese consumer protection, data privacy, and product regulatory requirements
• Coordinate with regional and global legal teams on cross-border matters and company-wide legal strategy
• Manage external counsel relationships and legal budgets for Japan
• Support corporate governance and risk management across Japan entities

We are looking for a lawyer with:

• 10+ years of experience in-house or at a major law firm, ideally with in-house leadership experience
• Qualified lawyer in Japan and/or another major jurisdiction
• Strong knowledge of Japanese corporate, commercial, and consumer protection law
• Fluent Japanese and business-level English
• Experience in consumer technology, retail, or a related sector strongly preferred
• Proven ability to operate independently as the senior legal presence in a country organization, with an exceptionally high standard of discretion and confidentiality
