Assistant Diving Safety Officer

Responsibilities:

1. Conduct scientific diver training, swim evaluations, checkout dives, diving courses, and specialty modules.
2. Deliver snorkeling and freediving training, including emergency procedures, equipment use, and operational standards.
3. Evaluate diver readiness and performance; develop scientific divers through coaching and mentorship.
4. Manage fill station operations, training, and required recordkeeping.
5. Ensure compliance with OIST policies, AAUS standards, and applicable Japanese and international regulations.
6. Maintain diver records and program documentation, including certifications, medical clearances, incident reports, and service logs.
7. Review dive and field plans to verify appropriate risk assessment, environmental considerations, and staffing.
8. Oversee maintenance, inspection, and inventory of scuba equipment and specialized research gear.
9. Support vessel and field operations, including gear preparation, equipment deployment, and sample collection activities.
10. Provide program continuity through DSO coverage, board participation as needed, reporting support, and operational assistance to MTS as needed.

職責:

1. 科学ダイバー向けのトレーニング、水泳能力評価、チェックアウトダイブ、ダイビングコースおよび専門モジュールを実施する。
2. シュノーケリングおよびフリーダイビングのトレーニングを提供し、緊急時対応、機材の使用方法、運用基準について指導する。
3. ダイバーの準備状況やパフォーマンスを評価し、コーチングやメンタリングを通じて科学ダイバーの育成を行う。
4. 充填ステーションの運用、トレーニング、必要な記録管理を担当する。
5. OIST のポリシー、AAUS（米国科学ダイビング協会）基準、関連する日本および国際規制への遵守を徹底する。
6. 認定証、健康診断書、インシデントレポート、サービスログなど、ダイバー記録およびプログラム文書を管理する。
7. ダイブ計画およびフィールド計画をレビューし、適切なリスク評価、環境への配慮、スタッフ配置がなされているかを確認する。
8. スキューバ機材や専門的な研究機材のメンテナンス、点検、在庫管理を監督する。
9. ボート運航およびフィールド業務をサポートし、機材準備、装置の展開、サンプル採取活動などを補助する。
10. 必要に応じて DSO（Diving Safety Officer）の代行、委員会参加、報告支援、MTS 業務への運用サポートなどを通じて、プログラムの継続性を確保する。
11. その他、指示された業務。

Qualifications:

(Required)

1. AAUS Scientific Diver (or equivalent) and active-status Scuba Instructor from a recognized training agency.
2. Current certifications in CPR, AED, Diving First Aid, Neurological Assessment, and Emergency Oxygen Administration.
3. Ability to meet OIST and AAUS medical and physical fitness requirements for diving, including the capacity to perform demanding fieldwork and lift heavy equipment.
4. Minimum two years of experience in scientific, research, and/or instructional diving.
5. Working knowledge of AAUS standards or equivalent scientific and occupational diving frameworks.
6. Experience supervising training and research dives, demonstrating sound judgment and situational awareness.
7. Experience with small-boat operations and familiarity with basic scuba equipmentmaintenance (regulators, BCs, cylinders).
8. Strong administrative and documentation skills with a high level of accuracy.
9. Effective communication skills, including the ability to provide constructive feedback and intervene in unsafe situations.
10. Adaptable, safety-minded, and committed to environmental stewardship and responsible scientific diving practices.

(Preferred)

1. NAUI Instructor (active status).
2. DFA Instructor (DAN, NAUI, or equivalent).
3. Freediving Instructor from an internationally recognized training agency.
4. Aqualung equipment service technician qualification.
5. Visual inspector certification.
6. Experience with fill station and compressor maintenance/repair.
7. Experience operating vessels in coastal or open-ocean environments.
8. Proficiency in both English and Japanese.
9. Japanese driver’s license.
10. Bachelor’s degree in marine science, biology, environmental science, engineering, or related field.
11. Experience using and maintaining field monitoring equipment
12. Experience teaching or mentoring early-career researchers and/or graduate students.

1. AAUS Scientific Diver（または同等資格） と、認定トレーニング機関から発行された 現役ステータスのスキューバインストラクター資格 を保有していること。
2. CPR、AED、ダイビング応急処置、神経学的評価、緊急用酸素供給 の最新の認定資格を保有していること。
3. OIST および AAUS の医学的・体力的要件を満たし、負荷の高いフィールドワークや重量物の運搬が可能であること。
4. 科学ダイビング、研究ダイビング、または教育ダイビングでの実務経験が最低2年以上あること。
5. AAUS基準、または同等の科学・職業ダイビング基準 に関する実務知識を有すること。
6. 訓練ダイブおよび研究ダイブの監督経験 があり、適切な判断力と状況認識能力を備えていること。
7. 小型船舶の運用経験 があり、レギュレーター、BC、シリンダーなどの 基本的なスキューバ機材のメンテナンス に精通していること。
8. 正確性の高い事務処理能力および文書管理能力 を有すること。
9. 安全ではない状況に介入でき、建設的なフィードバックを提供できる優れたコミュニケーション能力 を持つこと。
10. 柔軟性があり、安全意識が高く、環境保全と責任ある科学ダイビングを重視していること。

12. 研究初期段階の研究者や大学院生への指導またはメンタリング経験
