Senior Legal Counsel - Global Renewable Energy Projects

A leading international energy and infrastructure developer is seeking an experienced legal professional to support its expanding operations in Japan. Based in Tokyo and working closely with regional and global stakeholders, this position will play a key role in advising on project development, investments, commercial transactions, corporate governance, and regulatory matters across a growing portfolio of energy and infrastructure assets.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide practical legal advice to business leaders on a wide range of matters related to the development, acquisition, construction, financing, and operation of large-scale infrastructure and energy projects
• Support strategic growth initiatives, including asset acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships, and entry into new market segments
• Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements, including project development contracts, land and site-related arrangements, offtake agreements, construction contracts, and long-term service arrangements
• Advise on project financing transactions and related documentation, working closely with lenders, investors, financial advisors, and external counsel
• Coordinate and manage external legal advisors, ensuring high-quality support and effective cost management.
• Support corporate secretarial and entity management activities for Japanese subsidiaries and project companies, including governance documentation, board matters, and delegated authority arrangements
• Provide legal support in relation to disputes, claims management, and regulatory inquiries when required
• Partner with cross-functional teams while managing legal risk

The key requirements for the role are as follows:

• Law degree from a reputable university with a strong academic background
• Approximately 5–12 years legal experience gained within a leading law firm and/or multinational corporate legal department
• Experience advising on infrastructure, energy, project development, project finance, M&A, or other complex commercial transactions
• Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance legal considerations with business objectives
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
• Excellent drafting, negotiation, stakeholder management, and communication skills
• Comfortable working independently while collaborating across diverse and international teams
• Strong project management and organizational capabilities
• Confidence interacting with senior management and external counterparties
• Proactive, hands-on approach with the ability to take ownership of matters from inception through completion
