Job Description

Job Description – Quality Manager or Engineer
Job Purpose
The Quality Engineer (Fabrication & Welding) will be responsible for ensuring that all structural steel elements, welded assemblies, and fabricated components meet stringent customer specifications, engineering drawings, and international codes (like AWS or IS). With 3 to 4 years of experience, this professional will independently handle stage-wise shop floor inspections, non-destructive testing (NDT), dimensional verifications, and quality documentation.
Core Responsibilities
1. Welding Inspection & NDT
•
Weld Quality Control: Conduct visual inspections of weldments before, during, and after welding to check for defects like porosity, undercut, or slag inclusion.
•
NDT Coordination: Perform or witness Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) including Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT) and Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT). Coordinate with third-party agencies for Radiography (RT) or Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
•
Standards Compliance: Verify that welding parameters match the approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) and ensure all welders on the floor are properly qualified (WPQR).
2. Dimensional & Fit-Up Inspection
•
Drawing Interpretation: Read and interpret complex heavy fabrication blueprints, structural drawings, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols.
•
Stage Inspection: Check fit-up alignment and final dimensions of heavy structures using precision measuring instruments (Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and coating thickness gauges).
3. Documentation & Customer Audits
•
Quality Records: Maintain comprehensive QA/QC documentation, including Material Test Certificates (MTC), Dimension Inspection Reports (DIR), and Final Release Certificates.
•
Third-Party Inspections (TPI): Prepare documentation and offer fabricated structures for client inspection or external third-party agencies (e.g., L&T, TUV, RITES).
4. CAPA & Continuous Improvement
•
Defect Analysis: Identify rework or rejection trends on the shop floor. Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) using tools like 5-Why or Fishbone diagrams.
•
Corrective Actions: Implement CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions) to reduce welding rework percentages and improve first-time-right yield.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
•
Education: B.E. / B. Tech or Diploma in Mechanical / Production Engineering.
•
Experience: 3 to 4 years of core QA/QC experience strictly within heavy fabrication, PEB (Pre-Engineered Buildings), structural steel, or heavy equipment manufacturing.
•
Certifications (Preferred but highly valued):
•
ASNT Level II in NDT methods (PT, MT, UT, RT).
•
AWS-CWI or CSWIP 3.1 (Welding Inspector certification) is a major plus.
•
Technical Skills:
•
Thorough knowledge of welding codes (AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, or relevant IS codes).
•
Practical understanding of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems
