Engine Calibration Engineer

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize engine calibration parameters to achieve performance, emissions, fuel economy, and durability targets.
  • Manage and refine calibration settings across approximately 10,000 control parameters.
  • Create test plans and evaluation procedures for engine performance testing conducted by test operators.
  • Analyze engine test results and optimize calibration settings using data from: Desktop analysis and simulation environments, Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and test bench environments, Chassis dynamometer testing, Vehicle validation activities
  • Perform calibration activities using MATLAB/Simulink and support validation on vehicles.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate and improve engine control strategies, including Fuel injection systems, Ignition systems, Air management systems, Exhaust and aftertreatment systems
  • Propose and evaluate engine hardware improvements, such as: Cylinder and piston design optimization, Fuel injector specification enhancements, other combustion and air system improvements
  • Support calibration development for multiple engine variants and vehicle platforms.
  • Participate in technical discussions and communicate findings, recommendations, and development progress to stakeholders.

Required Skills

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ yrs experience in engine calibration (gasoline engine calibration experience is acceptable).
  • Strong understanding of engine control logic and calibration fundamentals, including Fuel injection control, Ignition control, Air management systems, Exhaust and emissions control systems
  • Hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex performance data and calibration maps.
  • Business level Japanese language proficiency (JLPT N3+)
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and communicate through email in Japanese.
  • Strong teamwork, communication skills, and a positive, proactive mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of diesel engine systems and combustion technologies.
  • Experience with engine control strategy development.
  • Hands-on experience with engine calibration tools such as: ATI Vision, ETAS INCA, CANalyzer, MATLAB
  • Experience with simulation and modeling tools such as: GT-Power, AVL CRUISE-M
  • Familiarity with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), test bench, chassis dynamometer, and vehicle testing environments.
