About Tokyo Academics:

Tokyo Academics is the passion project of a constellation of teachers, researchers, and academics from around the world. Since 2012, we’ve evolved from a few university friends to a growing number of part-time and full-time individuals located in Tokyo, as well as working remotely. We are an organization of experts deeply passionate about helping students meet their potential and capture the opportunities of the future.

 

We are looking for an independent self-starter to drive our HR strategy, overseeing all internal HR functions (including recruitment). This role will work closely with the management team to implement best practices that foster a positive work environment, support with resolving people issues, promote compliance with company policies, and ensure the effective delivery of a professional recruitment service to comply with Tokyo Academics’ Recruitment and Selection policy and best practice guidelines.

 

This role will be based out of our Tokyo office and working during regular business hours of 10:00 am to 7:00 pm Japan time.

 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced startup of 140+ team members around the world. You will play a significant role in helping the organization continue to grow by bringing on new tutors and team members.

 

What you will work on:

  • Be the main source of expertise across all general areas of HR and recruiting, including organizational design, planning, diversity and inclusion, employee experience, talent and performance management, compensation, and employee relations.
  • Handle Goal setting, Performance Review, Salary Review, and Employment Contract renewal processes at any level of staff: CEO to interns. 
  • Assess core metrics: retention, engagement, hiring, costs, infractions, staff performance.
  • Partner with division leads in the strategic planning process of the company to enable leaders to participate in formulating corporate goals and developing departmental plans.
  • Develop best practices around HR operational matters such as performance, conduct, capability, conflict resolution and provide the necessary support to resolve workplace issues.
  • Monitor appropriate implementation of progressive compliance based on company rules and regulations, overseeing meetings regarding lack of compliance, terminations, and investigations.
  • Contribute to the development of the company and show leadership qualities and decision-making ability within all stakeholder meetings.
  • Deliver employee engagement/initiatives, analysis of data and feedback, and provide  the Company with recommendations in leadership meetings.
  • Coordinate with department managers to forecast future hiring needs.
  • Manage and deliver data-driven reports to display HR trends and recruiting metrics.
  • Identify hiring needs by using relevant data and communicating with hiring managers.
  • Oversee the Company recruitment and work towards strengthening the Company’s recruiting goals.

スキル・資格

Our ideal candidate:

  • Graduate of a Bachelor’s degree program related to Business Administration, Human Resources, or any relevant degree 
  • Is native or fluent in English (speaking/reading/writing), Japanese ability is desirable
  • Has 5+ years of experience in HR and recruiting
  • Is committed to Japan for the next 3+ years
  • Has familiarity and is comfortable with international working cultures
  • Is solutions-focused, proactive, a team player and has strong attention to detail 
  • Has a successful track record of leading, managing and motivating company employees
  • Has strong decision making and problem-solving capabilities in order to solve complex issues
  • Champions company values and develops cultural initiatives to grow the community
  • Is comfortable working through the ambiguity of a growing organization, and feels comfortable asking questions and seeking help
  • Is an HR subject matter expert with direct involvement in operational employee relation cases where a greater level of seniority or experience is required
  • Has a high degree of judgment and can juggle a diverse range of priorities
  • Is data-driven and results-focused, proficiency with Excel and/or Google Sheets is desirable
  • Experienced in setting SLAs, monitoring and reporting
  • Demonstrates knowledge of various recruiting techniques, and has experience in both building and executing recruiting processes
