Job Description

The Eiken Foundation of Japan seeks experienced writers/editors for full-time positions developing content for English-proficiency tests.

 *position with a possibility of becoming permanent employee at some point in the future.

Duties:

  1. Write, edit, and proofread content for reading, listening, speaking, and writing tests according to detailed test specifications.
  2. Take part in editorial meetings in which proposed content (sometimes your own) is critiqued and revised.
  3. Assign and manage subcontracted work, evaluating the performance of item writers and providing feedback.
  4. Train, manage, and evaluate examiners and raters.
  5. Rate responses from speaking and writing tests.
  6. Assist at public test sites as an administrator or examiner.
  7. Report to senior editors and section managers.
  8. Perform general administrative office duties as needed.
  9. Maintain courteous, professional spoken and written communication in both Japanese and English.

You will work as part of a team of committed, professional editors of various nationalities, gain expertise in language-test development, and further sharpen your writing and editing skills, all while directly contributing to English-language education in Japan.

Required Skills

Qualifications:

  1. Native English speaker.
  2. Bachelor’s degree or higher; TESOL certification preferred.
  3. Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Familiarity with well-known style guides, such as The Chicago Manual of Style, a plus.
  4. Experience writing or editing materials for publication; test-development experience strongly preferred.
  5. Experienced and proficient in software applications such as MS Word and Excel.
  6. Excellent time-management skills and able to multi-task and prioritize work.
  7. Advanced Japanese language skills (JLPT Level N2 or higher).
  8. Able to work as part of a team in a Japanese office environment.
  9. Reside within commuting distance of central Tokyo.
  10. Strong desire to contribute to English-language education in Japan; interest or background in language testing or applied linguistics a plus.

Compensation:
Monthly salary of 300,000 yen, two annual bonuses, paid annual vacation leave, overtime pay, commuting allowance, and other benefits.

Notes:
Short-listed candidates will be invited to attend an interview and complete a writing and proofreading test. The interview will consist of two sections: one conducted in Japanese and the other in English. Candidates who pass the first interview stage will be asked to attend a second and third interview.

Working conditions:

  1. Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. plus overtime as needed; must also be willing to work on the Saturdays and/or Sundays when tests are held.
  2. One-year renewable contract.
  3. Positions to start as soon as possible.

Nihon Eigo Kentei Kyokai, or the Eiken Foundation of Japan (formerly the Society for Testing English Proficiency, Inc.), is a public-interest incorporated foundation established in 1963 and based in Tokyo, Japan.

Eiken produces and administers English-proficiency tests with the backing of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and in cooperation with Japanese prefectural and local boards of education, public and private schools, and other leading testing bodies.
