高くつく
“cost an arm and a leg”は非常に高価な様を指します。様々ないわれがありますが、ある説では戦争で腕や脚を失った兵士を指して、払う代償の大きさを表現したというものや、肖像画を描くときに、肩から上だけでなく、腕や脚まで描く場合は追加料金がかかることから、この表現が使われるようになったという説があります。明確ないわれは不明ですが、非常に高くつくことを指して使われています。
