All that glitters in Golden Week may include a career
Joining the nation-wide vacation blitz in Golden Week on May 3 evokes bittersweet anticipation. It's one of Japan's longest yet most hectic holidays, promising to plunge even the adroit planner into huge crowds, queues and crash courses in patience. But that's only half the story. Golden Week 2005 saw a surge of 856,000 locals traveling abroad and a long-awaited year-on-year rise (1.4%) in domestic travel. It has Japan's tourism, travel and hospitality industries anticipating a Midas touch. In all, 2005 recorded the second highest rate of overseas travel in 40 years.
