Richard found his place in Japan with a one-way ticket
Here’s a British man who, among the explosion of new online businesses, has found success with an online recruiting business focusing on bilingual professionals. He’s had a long and difficult journey since leaving his hometown and making it in a far away land called Japan, but has been able to enjoy the hard times along the way.
Special Interview
Richard Bysouth, President of C.C. Consulting was interviewed by Nikkei Career Magazine as an expert for online foreign company recruitment trends.
‘Language skills’ were long considered the entry ticket to foreign-capitalized companies. This entrance has widened considerably. Richard Bysouth, who operates the bilingual recruitment website ‘CareerCross’, analyzes the situation: “For top managers English skills are essential, but in staff-level positions, where openings have increased in recent years, the work is carried out almost entirely in Japanese. For these jobs the English language hurdle is being lowered.”
Special Report
Richard Bysouth, President of C.C. Consulting was interviewed by Newsweek Japan as an expert for online foreign company recruitment trends.
However, there are also many experts who claim that the problem lies in the uniform approach to hiring and treatment of employees, which does not allow them to put their professional skills to full use.
Richard Bysouth, president of C.C. Consulting, a company running a bilingual recruitment website, says, "Compared to foreign-affiliated companies, who emphasize experience and skills gained outside of the company, the Japanese market for mid-career hiring is still immature."

Richard Bysouth has some surprising career advice for Japanese businesspeople pining for the traditional panacea of employment with a major corporation: "Try choosing smaller companies." He says it can be far more rewarding to be "a big cog in a smaller company." That’s not all.
On The Inside

Additional reporting by Nick Jones
Richard Bysouth, who runs an online recruiting company for bilingual
job seekers, says foreigners and overseas companies sometimes
fail in Japan because they’re unable to appreciate the difference
in work culture. “Being different does not mean it’s wrong,”
he says. “Here if a deal has to go through, one has to approach
all section heads individually. Only then can the company top
brass sign and seal the deal. Often Westerners find it frustrating.
It might take long, but once agreed, everyone is on board and
things move fast.”

“Searching for the Perfect Manager“

Foreign companies in Japan need advanced technology, IP assets
and, especially, solid employees: bilingual, bicultural and driven
to succeed. But does such a "perfect" combination exist?
DESPITE A SHORT POST-IRAQ war market recovery that saw the Nikkei
stock index peak at 9,990 (closing level) in July this year,
the rally has since faltered, and Japanese consumers continue
to keep their purses closed and either pay down their debts or
set aside some savings for an uncertain future.
