Cover Letters

How do I attach a cover letter when I apply?

You can attach a cover letter to your application by selecting the title of the cover letter you’d like to use. If you haven’t saved any cover letters, you can type your cover letter directly in the cover letter field on the application form.

How many cover letters can I save?

It is possible to save up to 3 cover letters on your profile. They can be edited and deleted at anytime.

Resumes

I would like to save the resume but can not go to the next step.

If you cannot continue to the next step, the most likely problem is that some compulsory fields have not been filled in or a word limit has been exceeded. Compulsory fields are marked in red, so please check to make sure they are filled in correctly.

I would like to apply using a resume I made in Word. Is it possible?

When applying for jobs, you must use either a “CareerCross Resume” or a “Copy and Paste Resume”. Resumes created in Word or other proprietary software cannot be used. We recommend copying and pasting your original Word (or other) resume into a “Copy and Paste Resume”.

Can I create several resumes to match different kinds of companies and jobs?

Yes it is possible to save up to 3 resumes in your profile. You can use any one of these to apply for a job, but you can only make 1 resume “Public” or “Anonymous”.

How can I edit the resume?

You can edit your resume by clicking “Edit” next to your saved resume on the “Resumes” page. You can also preview your resume and click on any of the “Edit” links on that page.

Is it possible to see how many times my resume has been looked at by employers?

Yes. You can find the number in the “Resumes” page. The “Views” column indicates how many times your resume has been viewed by an employer. If you are getting a low number of “views”, try editing your resume title, make sure your resume is not hidden and refresh your resume. You can also see which companies have viewed your resume by visiting your “My Page”.

What is the difference between a “CareerCross Resume” and a “Copy and Paste Resume”?

A “CareerCross Resume” consists of 5 easy to fill out forms that cover all the necessary information required for a good resume. It is a quick and easy way to create a resume without worrying about the style and layout. A “Copy and Paste Resume” requires you to input some basic information and then you can copy and paste your existing resume into a free text field for English and/or Japanese.

Why should I use the “Refresh” function for my resume?

When you refresh your resume, the “last updated” field on your resume will be set to the current date. Resume search results are listed by date, so you can push your resume to the top of the list by refreshing regularly. Also a recently updated resume is a lot “fresher” and shows you have taken the time to keep your resume up to date.

Job Search

Can I find companies by using a Keyword search?

The keyword search looks for matches within a job’s content. It is not suited for a company name search. If you would like to search by company name, please go to the “Company List”.

A job in my “Job Basket” has disappeared. What happened?

Jobs are automatically deleted from the Job Basket after 2 months. Also, whenever a job is hidden it will not be viewable on the site and therefore will be removed from your Job Basket. It is important to have a resume and cover letter ready so that you can quickly apply for jobs on the website to avoid disappointment.

Resume Privacy Settings

What are the differences between “Public”, “Anonymous” and “Private” in the resume privacy settings?

When creating your resume you’ll have to choose a "Resume Status" that determines who can see your resume. If you select "Private", your resume will not be viewable by employers conducting resume searches; however you can still use your “Private” resume to apply online to jobs. Please note that if you apply, your resume will become visible to that employer. If you select "Public", your resume and name will be viewable by employers conducting resume searches. If you select "Anonymous", your resume will be viewable by employers conducting resume searches, but your name and present company will be marked as "Withheld". Only one resume can be made "Public" or “Anonymous” at any one time, but any of your resumes can be used when you apply online. You can update your resume status at any time.

Resume Tip: If you create a "Copy and Paste Resume", you will need to manually remove any information that you want to make confidential.

Block Employer

I would like to have my resume viewable, but can I block certain companies from viewing my resume?

You can block a company provided that they are using CareerCross at the time you try to block them. Please see the Company List for a full list of companies using CareerCross. To block a company, please go to your “Resumes” page, and go to “Privacy Settings”. In the “Block Employer” section, enter the name of the company that you would like to block and click “Search Employers”. Then check the company you would like to block and click “Block”. This company can no longer view your resume.

* Note: You can only bock a company which is currently posting jobs on CareerCross. Please regularly check the “Company List” for a list of these companies.

If you are concerned about your privacy, we recommend setting your resume as “Anonymous” or putting your name or current company as “Anonymous” when you are updating your resume. If you have set your resume as “Anonymous”, your name and current employer will appear as “Name Withheld”.

* Note: If you have uploaded your resume as a “Copy and Paste Resume”, you will have to manually remove any confidential details from your copy and paste resume.
