The RBS Group formed a consortium with Fortis and Santander to acquire ABN AMRO; this bid was announced as successful in October 2007. For Global Markets this acquisition combines a number of complementary strengths and synergies, and provides an extensive international presence across more than fifty countries. It also provides a strong platform for growth and exciting challenges ahead.

Our History in Japan

Our history in Japan goes back to 1970 when NatWest opened its business in Tokyo. RBS has been expanding rapidly, offering the full range of finance and risk management services - including bonds, loans, foreign exchange and derivatives - for corporates and financial institutions through two entities based in Tokyo. In Japan, some of our most notable deals have been in structured finance.

Our Japanese team has almost doubled in size in the last two years, bringing clients deeper market knowledge and the capacity to deliver a wide range of products as the Japanese economy strengthens.

World class debt and foreign exchange services

We have rapidly become a leading participant in the Japanese equity derivatives market1 thanks to our global network. And, if clients need competitive and liquid foreign exchange services, RBS is a recognised leader in foreign exchange in Asia2.

We bring new ideas to structured finance

Across the globe, we have a record for using innovation to deliver concrete results in structured finance. We bring the same ‘Make it happen’ culture to Japan. For example, RBS Tokyo Branch provided the acquisition finance for Softbank’s $15.4billion purchase of Vodafone Japan in 2006.

The ABN AMRO integration brings considerable strengths in equities, corporate finance and advisory, emerging markets and transaction banking (cash management and trade finance).

A history of strong relationships in Japan

Having traded in Japan for more than 145 years, ABN AMRO has maintained a continuity that has helped build strong relationships with key corporations, financial institutions and public sector organisations. The bank has focused especially on the consumer, general manufacturing, healthcare, chemicals, industrials, integrated energy and telecoms, media and technology sectors.
