Job Description
1. A senior attorney position within the Asia Pacific legal department is a key position within the respective entity organization
2. Provide legal advice, counsel and support for complex global sales transactions for telecoms, telecom related and network integration services, network outsourcing services with multinational customers who are headquartered in Japan but who have worldwide operations
3. Provide remote legal support to law colleagues in foreign countries looking to close comparable deals with multinational customers abroadabroad but whose contracts will have a JapaneseJapanese aspect
4. Provide compliance advice on topics such as telecommunications, importation, customs, encryption, data protection and privacy; laborlabor law, corporate compliance, JV governance
5. Liaise and coordinate with other law colleagues in the legal department with regard to the above and other subject areas in order to provide consistent advice across the entire corporate enterprise
6. Provide legal support for contractual arrangements for non-standard service offerings (such as outsourcing arrangements)
7. Provide legal support to Product Houses in developing solutions as well as to roll out new service offerings to Japan, and negotiating any necessary contracts with third party suppliers to assure back-to-back coverage of all associated risks
8. Provide legal support to the tax and billing departments to assure that the language in the company’s sales contracts accurately and consistently reflects company’s contract
9. Provide legal support on operational matters such as to the real estate management function in connection with leasing of real estate and facilities management arrangements to the procurement organization for Japan including negotiating supply arrangements
10. Address disagreements in commercial transactions with customers, find alternatives/compromises, escalate when required
11. Address conflicts between company’s preferred business practices and applicable local law and find alternative approaches to address such
12. Address disagreements with suppliers, employees, and all other disputes in Japan
13. Provide corporate compliance support and assist External Affairs with regulatory compliance for the company in Japan
Required Skills
1. Qualified to practice law within Japan preferred with at least 10 or more years post-qualification experience preferably including major law firm training OR US qualified with experience working in a Japanese firm
2. 5 years experience working as in-house counsel with a multinational corporation, preferably a US MNC and preferably with some exposure to US laws, such as Sarbanes Oxley
3. Knowledge of telecommunications law is preferred
4. Excellent English and Japanese language skills required
5. Superb communication and writing skills, able to communicate succinctly and concisely with legal analysis and judgment to internal decision makers (business and legal) on negotiation topics and which balances the customer requirements with reasonable and prudent risks on company’s part
6. Able to analyzeanalyze complex information and present in a clear, understandable manner and make recommendations which are consistent with company’s policies and practices
7. Able to prioritize, work to deadlines and work independently
8. Enthusiasm and good interpersonal skills which will allow the candidate to work efficiently and effectively with and across all internal business clients from the start of projects through to completion, including assuring compliance with a myriad of internal approval process
9. Ability to travel throughout Japan (and possibly within A/P region) if required for business purposes
10. Thinks strategically and takes hands on role in being the legal counsel
11. Flexible, responsive and resourceful when reacting to changing work demands and ability to work as part of team as well as on own initiative; and excellent IT skills
