Job Description
Main Purpose of Job
Provide operational support for Server and Database platforms to meet the demands of projects, project support and managing incidents requiring support with third-party providers and vendors.
General responsibilities:
- Assist in the resolution of second and third level problems, which have been escalated either via the Service Desk or Operations (including liaison with third-party providers and vendors).
- Help with regular reviews of Problem Management data to highlight causes of frequent or high impact failures and recommend preventive action.
- Identify and implement improvements to the way in which distributed systems achieve or improve upon associated service level targets and meet business requirements.
- Assist in carrying out project work and project support including peripheral hardware and software support.
- Realize the change management operations in line with the agreed processes.
- Work with projects to identify and evaluate emerging technologies that will lead to a reduction in costs or an improvement in service.
- Be a key contributor to the disaster recovery tests done on a regular basis.
Server and Database responsibilities:
- Assist with planning, testing and implementation of servers and peripheral database/software/hardware, including upgrades, ensuring change control procedures are followed, supportability guaranteed and service-level agreements clear.
- Develop, document and keep updated standards and procedures for each new server environment.
- Design and build new server environments
-Carry out server availability and performance tuning to ensure agreed service levels are met.
- Carry out capacity planning for the necessary evolution of databases and server environments in place (to ensure agreed service levels keep being met)
- Carry out domain management design, back up and restore design and data management.
- Implement solutions to support software and patch distribution.
- Monitor and control third parties working on server, database, gateway and peripheral hardware/software to ensure agreed service levels are met, and that an effective quality service is being provided.
- Provide technical consultancy on server, database, gateway and peripheral hardware/software to the business.
Required Skills
Experience and skills required
- Competent Server and Database analyst with an excellent record in a distributed computer environment (over a period of at least 2 years).
- Strong knowledge and strong experience of Windows 2003, Windows 2000 and Active Directory
- Good knowledge and practice of Oracle databases
- Good knowledge and practice of SAP Basis
- Also preferred are a good knowledge and the previous practice of some of the following technologies:
- Server OS: (on top of the mandatory Windows Server and Active Directory skills) VMWare, Unix, Linux
- Services: MS Exchange, SMTP, SQL Server, WebSphere
- Management tools: Netbackup, Arcserve, Unicenter, SMS
- Gateway/Network: TCP/IP services, DNS, DHCP, WINS, remote access products, firewalls, Mimesweeper.
- PC Environment: Dell Hardware, Windows XP, main PC applications
Language:
- Good verbal and written English communication skills
