
Responsibilities include providing legal advice and support to various business units; drafting, negotiating and reviewing contracts, facilitating IP litigation and other industry specific legal duties.
For exceptional candidates who are only interested in staying in Tokyo, the position may be worked out of the Tokyo office with commuting to Osaka required on a regular basis.
General Duties / Tasks
・ Draft, negotiate and review contracts including licensing agreements, business development agreements and manufacturing contracts in both English and Japanese
・ Provide legal advice and support to all the company’s business units on a variety of issues including employment, tax, compliance, antitrust and fair trade practices
・ Work together with employees across all business units to develop creative solutions to any issues or problems that arise
・ Facilitate IP litigation by acting as the liaison between management and external counsel
・ Provide legal advice to clients if necessary
・ Review and approve new company compliance regulations on an annual basis
・ Manage and supervise other legal staff
・ Report activities to the Legal Director in the International Division Chicago Office on a regular basis
The ideal candidate will have minimum 8 years legal experience, including substantial experience in international corporate and business transactions, strong contract drafting, negotiating and client communication skills. Native level Japanese and fluent English are prerequisite for this role.
Qualifications and experience
・ Minimum 8 years legal experience, including substantial experience in international and domestic corporate and business transactions
・ Strong contract drafting, negotiating and client communication skills
・ Admitted to practice law is preferred, but not essential
・ Successful record of counselling clients at a top law firm or in a major multinational corporation
・ In-depth knowledge of commercial law, civil law, company law and antimonopoly/antitrust law
Other requirements
・ Native level Japanese and fluent English ability
・ A second Asian language would be advantageous
・ Experience providing legal training to non-legal executives would be advantageous
・ Ability to adapt to changing environments and effectively work in a team
・ The successful candidate will have good time management skills, be entrepreneurial, resourceful and creative, and be able to work autonomously and independently
